Presidents Message
Phoenix  -  President’s message                                                   18 July 2021

The new Rotary year has started well, or as well as can be with COVID-19 cases still surging. We were honoured to have our incoming Rotary International President, Shekhar Mehta, from India, as our guest speaker at our Change-over on 20 June. It was his first Change-over in Australia, and one of his 11 meetings on-line around the world that day.

We’ve had discussions regarding fundraising and using the four-fifth Sundays a year to have casual informal meetings. The advantage of an E-Club is the is that meetings are well organised and succinct. However, members felt that some more casual informal meetings may assist in getting to know each other more, especially those members who are scattered in various locations. Meeting on-line is ideal as members can be anywhere in the world where they have a connection, to join in.

Our guest speaker on 18 July was the President of the Rotary Club of Lautoka in Fiji. She spoke about the aid distribution to cope with an outbreak of COVID-19. The cartons of goods were all clearly marked with the Rotary logo, and she almost doubled her membership as a result of her Club’s distribution of goods and assistance to their community.

We have also had the pleasure of inducting a new member, Doug Vincent. He has already lived up to our Rotary International President’s motto by “Serving to change lives”. Doug took his family through Africa, where his children attended a school in Kenya. The experience changed their lives. We look forward to hearing more about his work with the school in Kenya and to enjoying his fellowship in Rotary. We now have 15 Rotary Australia World Community Service (RAWCS) projects, including one recently registered for our hard-working Secretary and Assistant Governor, Oscar Akparanta.

I thank Dudley Mercer, our past President, and past Secretary David Dean, and the other Board Directors and members for leading the Club in 2020-21. Many Board members are continuing their service this year carrying forward the Club’s knowledge and expertise. David Dean is the Board Foundation Director as well as the District Foundation Chair and has given many presentations regarding District and Global Grants. Our Club is very diverse and inclusive, with members residing in various parts of Australia and in Africa.

There so many amazing programs, projects and services that Rotary members are involved in, and having several relatively new members, my theme this year is: “Know your Rotary” in order that they learn about the vast range of activities Rotary does, so we can “serve to change lives”.

Special notice -  Working With Children
This information just arrived.

Working with Children Checks extended for three months

19 July 2021
Working with Children Checks due to expire between 19 July 2021 and 26 September 2021 have been extended for three months. People who are granted an extension will be advised by email and the system will be automatically updated.
As restrictions are extended due to COVID-19, the primary concern for the Office of the Children's Guardian is the safety of children.
A NSW Working with Children Check clearance lasts for 5 years and then needs to be renewed.
There are more than 40,000 clearances in NSW that are due to expire in the next two months. This includes teachers and medical staff who require a clearance and may be restricted in their capacity to go to a Service NSW centre to finalise their renewal application.
The Children’s Guardian has extended all clearances that were due to expire from 19 July to 26 September for a further three months. The three-month period applies from the date of the person’s current expiry date.
People who are granted an extension will be advised by email and the system will be automatically updated. Employers should update their records to indicate the change in their employee’s expiry date.
People applying for the first time will need to go through the regular application process, which includes attending a Service NSW centre to verify their identity. This is to maintain the integrity of the Working with Children Check and ensure that children are not put at undue risk.
One of the strengths of the NSW system is that it is underpinned by ongoing, continuous checking. By extending these clearances, the Children’s Guardian will also be able to continuously monitor the people working with children and advise employers should anyone become barred through the continuous monitoring process.

Ways to nominate:
1)      Your club can nominate a sworn or unsworn officer for one or more of the attached awards but only in partnership with your local command. This can be done through an awards evening or just by touching base with the local commander and telling him/her your club would like to nominate. You can have the commander send you some people he believes are worthy, and you can then choose. The Commander is then responsible for entering the nomination on the Police intranet which he has already been sent instructions on how to access.
2)      Public nominations through the RC of Sydney site for Customer Service award and The IJ award for sworn officers and the IJ award for unsworn officers. These are the only awards that the public can nominate someone.

A huge shout out to the Rotary E-Club of Sydney. Without your Club’s support and David Dean as the District 9685 Rotary Foundation Committee Chair 2021-22, this life saving project would not have come to fruition.

The Rotary Club of Northlakes Toukley joined forces with the Rotary Club of Rudramati Kathmandu Nepal to lodge a Global Grant application to purchase medical equipment which will relieve the distress on hospitals due to the ravages of COVID-19. The impact of the COVID-19 Delta strain saw the lack of oxygen needed by hospitals to treat highly infected patients.

The focus of the grant is to purchase oxygen concentrators and medical equipment for hospitals in the Kageshwori Municipality in Kathmandu, Nepal.

We are excited to announce that Rotary International chose our application and four other applications worldwide to be the first applications to be processed under their new management system.

Cases in Nepal rose to over 3,000 new cases in a 24-hour period, so you can image the excitement the Rotary Club of Rudramati to be empowered to order the equipment.

This grant would not have been possible without The Rotary Foundation World Fund, District 9685,  and the following Rotary Clubs:
* Rotary Club of Northlakes Toukley,
* Rotary Club of Rudramati Kathmandu,
* Rotary Club of Gosford,
* Rotary Club of Gosford City,
* Rotary Club of East Gosford,
* Rotary E-Club of Greater Sydney,
* Rotary Club of Epping,
* Rotary Club of Nepean.
* Rotary Club of Macquarie Park,
* Rotary Club of Chatswood Roseville,

Dear fellow Rotarians,

The members and the board of the Rotary Club of Alexandria Cosmopolitan - District 2451 wish you a joyful new Rotary year 2021-2022.

After last year's cancelation of our flagship project "Cross Egypt Challenge" due to COVID-19 concerns and as more vaccine roll out, and more people around the world are getting vaccinated, travel restrictions have started to ease out and we could not be happier to announce that "Cross Egypt Challenge" will be held again this year between October 7 and 16, 2021.

Cross Egypt Challenge is an international cross-country motorcycle and scooter adventure tour conducted throughout the majestic and fascinating Egypt. This amazing Rotary project started in 2011 for the purpose of promoting tourism to Egypt, and for the past 10 years, Rotarians and riders from over 50 countries took part in the adventurous challenge. This year we celebrate 10 years of CEC and the new seaosn will start on October 7, last for 10 days and will pass by Egypt's top attractions and off the beaten track destinations.

Participation is open for Rotarians and non-rotarians alike and their accompanying spouses or friends from around the globe. People who do not ride motorcycles or scooters can also join this amazing adventure and be hosted in air-conditioned chase vans.

A normal practice we are used to conduct during Cross Egypt Challenge is an annual "Sahara Rotary Meeting" where particpating Rotarians along with Rotaracts from our organizing team conduct an official Rotary meeting in the Egyptian Desert – please view the attached image -, a practice that we happily repeat at each new season.

We are happy to invite you, and the members of your club to support our initiative by:
  1. Join the tour this October, be it on a scooter, on a motorcycle or in our chase vans and enjoy a once in a life-time experience (a motorcycle and scooter rental option is available for international participants). Direct link to the registration application which can be completed in 5 minutes is: www.crossegyptchallenge.com/registration

  2. Share the news about Cross Egypt Challenge with other felloe Rotarians and friends and invite thsoe interested to ride in this season’s tour.

Cross Egypt Challenge provides a very rewarding and challenging experience for participants from around the globe as it combines the best of adventure travels and extreme sports.
