The countdown has begun, as we prepare for our first trip to the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) since the pandemic brought the world to a standstill.
The January 2023 Australian volunteer team includes Dr Grace Maano (who will be making her second training trip with us), Dr Etwell Mari, Fergus Ewington, and Kevin and Lucy Hobgood-Brown.
Obstetric emergency training
In Kinshasa we’ll pick up Dr Rebecca Furaha Ka (above), a graduate of Université Protestante au Congo’s medical school, one of HandUp Congo’s project partners. She will interpret and support Dr Grace and Dr Etwell’s training sessions in emergency medicine, an initiative HandUp Congo has been involved with since 2015.
The doctors will be training on obstetric emergencies at three hospitals (in the DRC capital Kinshasa, and in rural hospitals in Equateur Province). This training is in collaboration with the DRC Emergency Medicine Association www.amurdc.org, the Ministry of Health’s National Program for Emergency and Humanitarian Action and Blugibbon www.blugibbon.com.au, which is once again providing trainees with USBs that snap on wrists, full of useful resources.
