Native animal rescue - from Val who spoke about this at the last Meeting
Native Animal Rescue Group
Bill Waterhouse has a native animal rescue group (NARG) at Majors Creek south of Braidwood, which is east of Canberra. In September, as the President, Bill spoke on the radio urgently requesting grass for his wombats. I donated grass in September and again in October. Fires started near Braidwood on 30 November. He took his own wombats to a safe place as his house and shelter were in danger. On Friday 10 January, I saw his picture on the front page of the Canberra Times kissing the baby wombat he rescued and named Essie. I cried. As the article states: The devastation is incomprehensible, and Bill is tired. If the poor defenceless native animals were not burnt, they are now dying of thirst and hunger from the destruction of their habitat. Bill and his people are doing their best to save as many as they can. Braidwood is nearly out of water and Canberra is now trucking water daily to them.
When I saw the article, I contacted Bill and asked how I could donate. I requested that my (tax deductible) donation of a few hundred dollars go towards a tank and an irrigation pipe/s to grow his own grass and become self-sufficient. However, it will need more donations to meet the cost for this assistance.
