World Immunization Week
Because Rotary members and our partners have worked hard to counter vaccine hesitancy and reach all children with the polio vaccine, the world has seen a 99.9% reduction in polio cases since 1988.

Eclub Award at District Conference

Report from Judy Charnaud, Environmental Officer.
As you know from the last Phoenix our club has received the Bronze and Silver
Environmental Awards which were presented to us at the District Conference by Melanie
Lewis District Environmental Chair. Only two other clubs in our District – Wahroonga and
Lower Blue Mountains have attained this level!
On your behalf we are now hunting for gold so Doug Vincent, Ross Johnson and myself have
our planning hats on – we will be in touch with you all soon. Meanwhile let’s pat ourselves
on the back as we already have so many wonderful projects with an environmental aspect –
be it in improving biodiversity, recycling, climate action, improving food supplies, reducing
pollution or sustainable living.
You have seen this picture, taken at District Conference, before but it is worthy of
repetition.

Editors note: Like many Rotary members, Rotary Foundation Trustee Per Høyen, a member of the Rotary Club of Aarup, Denmark, had a desire to take action in response to the unfolding humanitarian crisis in Ukraine. Through the Rotary network, he and his wife learned of a 17-year-old Ukrainian refugee, Artem Ziablov, temporarily staying in Germany. In this second of two blog posts, Artem shares his journey from Ukraine to his new host family in Denmark.

By Artem Ziablov

I am a student of Karazin Kharkiv National University where I am in the first year of my studies for a bachelor’s degree in math and computer science. One week before the war started, my mother took me from Kharkiv to Irpin, a city in the Kyiv region, where I lived before my studies. On the morning of 24 February at five in the morning my mother woke me up to tell me that the war had started and that the country was under attack. I looked out the window and heard the bombs being dropped on Gostomel airport, 10 kilometers from our house. Ukrainian fighters were in the sky very close to us and Ukrainian missiles were firing at Russian troops, so it was very scary to stay there.

22 April 2022A roundup of Rotary news
Rotarians unite to send medical aid to Ukraine
Rotary members in North America, Argentina, and Europe are collaborating with a U.S.-based association of Ukrainian health care workers to collect and ship more than 100 tons of critical medical supplies to Ukraine. The effort was built off of connections Marga Hewko, president of the Rotary Club of Chicago, had forged with the Ukrainian medical community in Chicago. Rotary clubs have pooled their resources to secure donations from equipment manufacturers and purchase supplies which are then flown over to Europe for distribution within Ukraine. Read how Rotary’s network has been providing support to Ukraine.

Using innovation to prevent malaria
Volunteers and experts working to eliminate Malaria will be discussing the need to harness innovation to save lives and reduce the burden of the disease on World Malaria Day, 25 April. Partners for a Malaria-Free Zambia, The Rotary Foundation’s first Programs of Scale recipient, is implementing a three-year program to recruit, train, and support community health workers to test for and treat malaria in hard-to-reach areas of Zambia. Learn more about this effort and what Rotary is doing to prevent malaria in a blog for Rotary Service in Action.
Council on Legislation takes action
Representatives to the 2022 Council on Legislation 10-14 April voted overwhelmingly to add “equity and inclusion” to Rotary International’s bylaws, affirming the organization’s continued effort to be inclusive of all cultures, experiences, and identities, and to reflect the communities it serves. The five-day conference in Chicago, Illinois, USA, marked Rotary’s first successful attempt to host a hybrid international event since the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic. Representatives also supported a dues increase and a pilot that would test a new governance structure. Learn more about the council action.
Bee good to Bees
Bee a honey and consider joining Rotarians for Bees
Did you know…you can help save your local environment without even leaving the house? Bees in your neighborhood are dying due to a lack of flowering plants to feed on. Humans need bees to survive and you can help by adding three bee-friendly plants to your balcony or garden.
It’s as simple as 1, 2, Bee!

1. Source your bee-friendly seeds locally
2. Plant your seeds
3. Share your new plants and 3 positive thoughts or actions

There’s a growing buzz amongst Rotarians to get more active in supporting Rotary’s latest area of focus, the environment. Anyone in eClub of Greater Sydney or beyond who is interested in environment, conservation, gardens, climate change and yes, bees, is invited to contact Environment Director Judy Charnaud to learn how you can get involved. Contact Judy on jcharnaud@yahoo.com.au.
You can also join Rotarians for Bees at no cost. Check out www.rotariansforbees.org and their Facebook page, or contact Lucy Hobgood-Brown on lucy@claypartners.com. As an example of how Rotarians are making a difference in their community, have a look at this short video about the charming heritage town of Hall ACT, which has engaged the entire community in environmental protection: https://m.facebook.com/hallrotary/videos/237329934194039/.

The latest IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) report on Climate Change Mitigation, released by the UN on April 4, combines hope and urgency. “The decisions we make now can secure a livable future,” said IPCC Chair Hoesung Lee. “We have the tools and know-how required to limit warming.” “It’s now or never, if we want to limit global warming to 1.5 C,” added IPCC Working Group III Co-Chair Jim Skea.

Too often, quality goods from hospital beds to school desks end up in landfills across Australia when institutions buy new equipment or businesses discard unsold inventory. Rotarians have developed smart logistics to match these goods to the wish-lists from developing countries.

District Grant Applications;

We do have increased funding available for District Grants this coming year so can offer the support to more clubs. It is a great way to double the effectiveness of your club’s contribution to a project.
Here's a quick summary about grants
  • Up to $2500 for local projects and $5000 for international projects.
  • Must be matched by the club
  • Must be completed within the Rotary Year
  • The project must be a new one and not already be started
  • Preference will be given to clubs that plan full club member involvement
  • The Rotary Club is responsible for the simple recording of payments and the grant funds and will be required to give a summary when the project is complete.
  • The club must be qualified to take part with the Rotary Foundation. We are as I have attended the District Assembly Foundation talk and will complete the webinar.

We look forward to Boards and Avenue of Service chairs discussing their project plans prior to the new Rotary year starting and making applications for Foundation assistance through District grants.  Applications should be in before the end of June 2022.

PDG Tony Castley has advised that the time for the district grant applications to the club can be extended to Friday June10th. Applications will be assessed and the most worthy will be forwarded to District by end June.

" The prevailing Rotary attitude is rendering service is practicality. Its aim in performing a useful action is to be helpful and serviceable, not sentimental...As Practical idealists, we temper the fanciful flights of the dreamer with the limitations of common sense."
